Canadian global innovation cluster makes $44m commitment to advancing AI health tech

DIGITAL, a Canadian global innovation cluster for digital technologies, has announced a commitment worth an estimated $44 million to develop and deploy AI tech, with the aim of supporting healthcare providers and enhancing patient outcomes.

The funding comes under the Health Compass II project, which aims to launch four AI-driven modules integrated into an EHR-agnostic mobile app, covering patient engagement; reducing administrative burnout; assisting healthcare providers with documentation; and enhancing clinical decision making.

The project picks up on the challenge of slow integration around AI, citing an “urgent, unmet need for well-designed, efficient, and effective AI solutions”, and aiming to offer an “easy-to-implement, integrated AI-driven platform” for healthcare providers.

Partners receiving funds are WELL Health Technologies ($6.8 million), ORX Surgical ($2.5 million), Tali AI ($2.2 million), Phelix AI ($1.8 million), and HEALWELL AI ($1.7 million). Partner technologies being implemented to support the project include a patient-facing virtual agent; a smart inbox which streamlines administrative tasks; an AI voice assistant to capture information; and a clinical decision support module.

Whilst DIGITAL has invested $15.3 million, it estimates that along with earlier investments the total project value will reach $44 million after being “leveraged by investments from project partners”.

In other news on AI, the European Commission recently announced that AI Act has officially entered into force, offering a legal framework which seeks to address the risks of AI and place Europe “to play a leading role globally” by setting out clear requirements and obligations in support of “trustworthy AI”.
