Launch of patient summary features to support information sharing in New Brunswick, Canada

The Department of Health in New Brunswick has launched patient summary functionalities through the province’s health information app, MyHealthNB, in order to support residents to travel across regional and international borders with a “shareable, digital set of basic clinical data”.

Citizens can now log into MyHealthNB via app or web portal and access the patient summary which brings together around 12 months of health records; they can then create their own summary of information to share with health professionals who are not able to access New Brunswick’s electronic health records system in the event of requiring medical assistance whilst travelling.

As well as enabling information to be securely shared with other professionals and providers, the patient summary also aims to support citizens without a family doctor to access their own records with ease.

The patient summary feature was built by VeroSource, a subsidiary of health tech company Healwell AI.

From the government of New Brunswick, health minister Bruce Fitch has commented that MyHealthNB aims to “empower patients, providing them more control over their own health-care information”. He added a belief that New Brunswick is “the first province in Canada to allow our residents to create their own patient summary and decide when and with whom to share it”.

Other news from Canada includes the investment of $256 million to improve healthcare access and services in Newfoundland and Labrador, in support of the province’s three-year action plan; and the go-live of a new electronic patient record for hospitals within Island Health’s healthcare authority.
