Ministry of Health begins implementation of unified medical record in Brazil

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has begun the process of implementing a unified medical record, expanding its Meu SUS Digital app to facilitate access to health information, clinical history, test results, and more.

The Ministry reports that the app has recorded in excess of 50 million downloads to date, with 4.5 million active users, providing them with access to their health information, vaccination record, medications, and more.

A recently-launched feature is an interface for health professionals, which promotes continuity of care by enabling access to the unified electronic medical record, with health history “able to be accessed by the professional during the consultation, at any point in the service network throughout the territory of the country”.

Ana Estela Haddad, secretary of information and digital health, said: “Before, the electronic medical record was only in the unit where the patient was treated. Now, it is now available throughout the health network. This means quality and continuity in the care of the population.”

In order to support equitable roll-out across all regions of Brazil, the government has designated R$ 464 million in funding, recognising differences in connectivity at a regional level.

The Meu SUS Digital app is available to download from the Google Play or Apple App stores, and can also be accessed directly from an internet browser.

In other news, the Government of Nova Scotia has announced the expansion of the YourHealthNS app to allow patients to access more information about X-ray results, with Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson commenting that “this is just the beginning”.

As of July, residents of Nova Scotia will be able to access X-ray reports directly from the app, including any report findings, comparisons with previous X-rays, their medical history, and a summary.
